“What would they have said?”
Consider the philosophes that you have read about. Consider their philosophies and explain how and why they would react to the following issues.
1. John Locke on the American attempt to achieve a “regime change” in Iraq.
John Locke would agree and approve of the change, as it would most likely bring natural rights to the people and allow people the pursuit of happiness, as the government would give them the freedom.
2. Voltaire on the rule that no headdress of any kind would be allowed inside Canadian Legion (old story), or in today’s France that no religious symbols be allowed in public schools, i.e. turbans, hanukkahs, crucifixes, hajibs etc.
He would’ve disapproved of it as it violates the freedom of religion and expression and it would make the people very intolerable towards groups of people who are supposed to have their rights.
3. Rousseau on Myriad Genetics Corporation’s hold on patents that determine whether a woman has the genetic precondition that will lead to breast cancer.
Rousseau would disagree, as it would hold patents go against private property and make the Corporation have power because they have hold on patents.
4. Adam Smith on the Korean government’s decision to privatize services.
Smith would disagree because the government would make everything paid for and people would be limited to pursue their own rational self-interest. Also, eventually what could be the people’s money would become the certain business’s money and limit the prosperity of the country.
5. Cesare Beccaria on the use of capital punishment.
He would disagree because it would not allow criminals to learn from what they did and it would do no good to society and bring no justice. He would completely disagree.
